María Sosa Betancor

María’s highly perceptive, collage-like work is informed by her fine art and design background and the inspiration she draws from her childhood in the Canary Islands, where she had a view of a volcanic crater outside her bedroom window. Having grown up around this unique and dramatic perspective, she brings a vitality and visceral nature to the environments she shoots in her personal projects and commercial work. As a director, María’s artful eye and command of post-production create a singular visual style that is sophisticated and textured, bringing enigmatic yet striking worlds to life. She has worked with international brand giants like Adidas, Coca-Cola, and Volkswagen, and cultural trailblazers such as Loewe, Paloma Wool, Haim, and Playboy. Her work includes the spot “You Can Handle Anything” for hygiene brand INEOS, which was shortlisted at the 1.4 Awards; a documentary short profiling model and actor Adwoa Aboah for Nike’s “What Are You Working On” series; and the abstract film Hortensia showcasing digital designer Andrés Reisinger’s chair narrating its journey into physical existence. She also recently directed the film Sala for Troye Sivan’s perfume company, Tsu Lange Yor, exploring themes of new life and verdant memory.  María is based in Barcelona.
